The mother’s league
In the state of Oaxaca is the region of the isthmus of Tehuantepec, where indigenous cultures of great power coexist. One of them is the indigenous community of San Mateo del Mar that gathers during the leagues dates to Zapotecs and Ikoots. Although the latter is not a known culture in the rest of Mexico, its women are changing history. For the first time on the Fútbol Más fields they organized a league just for moms. That’s right, teams of mothers playing soccer, encouraged by their daughters, sons and couples.
In the region women do not have many spaces for participation, less in sports, which is why watching them play inspires the community. For the boys and girls of Fútbol Más México it is very exciting to see their moms exchange passes, celebrate goals and win green cards, because they live football in the same way: with joy and teamwork.
When the mother’s league is played, the boys and girls carry canvases in their support and encourage them on the field. One of the canvases says “We are all Fútbol Más” and on the court a line of women taken from the shoulders is formed dancing like a cuncuna after scoring a goal. All celebrate equally.
The ball does not discriminate and in this community forged a friendship between the mothers that transcends the court. They have joined in support of community projects for the Cancer Hospital and even to encourage recycling. Undoubtedly, the greatest impact that mothers have generated has been in the girls of Fútbol Más. They can finally see that as women they have no limits.
