Pick yourself up once again in community through games and sports
Constitución is one of the communities in Chile that has been most affected by natural disasters in the last decade. However, the desire to believe in the reconstruction project and to maintain the happiness of the children always is present in the neighbors. This notion is reaffirmed by the participation in the new programs implemented by Fútbol Más in the Region of Maule.
The 26th of January of 2017 was a tragic day for the outskirts of Constitución. In a matter of hours, the flames intensified, and burned everything in its way in the communities of Santa Olga, Papalilo, and Altos de Morán, among others.
The fire affected more than 900 families and threatened to completely destroy the neighborhoods of the area, but there is something that the fire couldn’t take with it, nor what the water hoses could put out; the desire to move forward through reconstruction programs that helped repair the communities.
As a result, the Foundation Fútbol Más started two programs this year that reinforces the work by the neighboring communities in order to return, little by little, the happiness of the neighborhoods and to repopulate the affected areas.
One of the programs held in Constitución is “I Play-Leaders for Conti,” which looks to strengthen the participation of the boys and girls of 14 to 18 years old, so that they can transform into the new leaders of their own community.
For these activities, 20 children from different schools all over Constitucíon, as well as 20 from the school Liceo Enrique MacIver of Santa Olga, participated in a mix of modules and jobs focused on supporting their community and taking care of the environment.
The principal job of these kids is to help in their community, which has been damaged in more than one occasion, but has always been able to lift itself up.
“The idea is that through these modules, the boys and girls begin to strengthen the different themes based on their abilities. All of this so that they can become leaders in improving the different necessities of their communities such as grouping together the animals, recycling, cleaning the beach, ect. All of this they gained through experiences participating in the modules,” explains Henry Sanhueza, coordinator of the project.
In this context, the new leaders of the region of Maule also will be present for the sports-learning activities in the localities of Santa Olga, Papalillo, and Altos de Morán.
The first landmark of this program will be completed next friday on the 5th of October in the sector of Altos de Morán, where the locals, with the help of their neighbors, will work in a rectangular space to transform it into a new football field for the community. This new field will be located in the section of the road that connects Santa Olga with Constitución.
In the cases of Papalillo and Santa Olga, the activities will take place more sporadically, with the primary goal of helping the neighbors return to a place where they can recover what the fire tried to take away. This will be made easier by the desire and motivation to recover their old homes.
The implementation of the leadership project and social reconstruction of Santa Olga is made possible by the the help of Forestal Santa Blanca, Desafio Levantemos Chile, and the Municipality of Constitutión.
