Fútbol Más Kenya is reaching more children in its second year
Fútbol Más in Kenya is growing, thanks to the support of the Chilean government through Fondo Chile and the partnership with the Educafrica Foundation. Having kicked off the 2018 programme one month ago, over 500 children and their families will participate in Fútbol Más.
While in Kibera the partnership with the community-based school Saint Martins continues at Laini Saba Field, in Mathare our activities on Austin Grounds increases with Fútbol Más sessions every afternoon throughout the school year. Here as well the partnership with Destiny Junior continues, but a new partnership with Valley View School and Abundant Life School takes the number of participants in the programme over 500 for 2018.
As the sessions are already back in place in both communities, the broader community started to activate again as well. Child Protectors put their T-shirts on, Youth Leaders are stepping up to assist and learn in the field, teachers accompany their class to our social football sessions where we teach through play and of course many parents, brothers and sisters got active registration their child, brother or sister in the programme. Shortly the Community Coordination Team will again pick up its activity as we move closer to our first Fútbol Más League of the year.
At the same time the new year allowed us to evaluate our start-up year. In total 404 children participated in Fútbol Más last year, while the attendance rate for these children was around 80%. In Kibera 45% of participants were girls, while in Mathare 54% were girls. Despite a shorter school year due to elections, the kids got to participate in around 110 sessions where they learned through their own experience in games about social topics like violence prevention, sexual health, hygiene, drug abuse, amongst others. At the same time the sessions worked on 10 different life skills according to the Fútbol Más curriculum centered on resilience.
Two emblematic Fútbol Más Leagues were held, one in Mathare and one in Kibera, with the children and their teachers traveling to the other side of town. Something which was a unique experience for many of them. This year, Fútbol Más Kenya will organize for the first time a closing Fútbol Más Final on neutral ground.
